{"id":10618,"date":"2014-05-17T13:27:33","date_gmt":"2014-05-17T05:27:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/?p=10618"},"modified":"2014-05-17T01:28:33","modified_gmt":"2014-05-16T17:28:33","slug":"parole-board-detains-no-means-no-sex-offender-until-end-of-prison-term","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/2014\/05\/17\/parole-board-detains-no-means-no-sex-offender-until-end-of-prison-term\/","title":{"rendered":"Parole board detains \u2018no means no\u2019 sex offender until end of prison term"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/shutterstock_34104697.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10600\" src=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/shutterstock_34104697.jpg\" alt=\"shutterstock_34104697\" width=\"667\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/shutterstock_34104697.jpg 667w, https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/shutterstock_34104697-300x160.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 667px) 100vw, 667px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\">EDMONTON\u2014The National Parole Board says an Alberta sex offender at the centre of a landmark \u201cno means no\u201d court case must remain behind bars until the end of his latest prison term.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\">Steve Ewanchuk (ee-WAHN\u2019-chuk) was scheduled for statutory release next month but the board has decided he still poses a risk to the public.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\">The 65-year-old is to remain in prison until his warrant expiry date in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\">Ewanchuk has a criminal record of sex assaults on young girls and teens that spans four decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\">He came to notoriety in 1999 in what was dubbed the \u201cno means no\u201d court battle that clarified Canada\u2019s sex assault laws.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\">The Supreme Court convicted him of sexual assault for groping a 17-year-old during a job interview, even though she told him three times to stop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\">Alberta\u2019s Court of Appeal had upheld Ewanchuk\u2019s acquittal. Appeal Justice John McClung remarked that the young woman \u201cdid not present herself in a bonnet and crinolines\u201d and that Ewanchuk\u2019s advances \u201cwere far less criminal than hormonal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: black;\">The Supreme Court said the judge\u2019s comments reinforced a stereotype that women invite sex assaults through their appearance.
