(Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/136682034@N03\/25481514214\/\">Long Thi\u00ean\/Flickr<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>VATICAN CITY \u2014 Pope Francis is warning the powerful to act humbly or risk ruin, using the first-ever papal TED talk to urge the world to show more solidarity with the poor and the weak.<\/p>\n<p>Francis delivered a videotaped talk to a TED conference in Vancouver on \u201cThe Future You.\u201d TED, short for Technology, Entertainment and Design, organizes conferences around the world aiming to spread ideas through short talks.<\/p>\n<p>The Vatican released the video Wednesday. In it, Francis outlined his vision of the interconnectedness of humanity, saying that with age he has grown increasingly convinced that \u201cnone of us is an island.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease allow me to say it loud and clear: The more powerful you are, the more your actions will have an impact on people, the more you are called to be humble,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you don&#8217;t, your power will ruin you, and you will ruin others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He cited a saying from his native Argentina about the effects of drinking gin on an empty stomach: \u201cYou feel dizzy, you get drunk, you lose your balance and you will end up hurting yourself and those around you if you don&#8217;t connect your power with humility and tenderness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Francis pleaded for greater solidarity in political, economic and scientific endeavours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow wonderful would it be, while we discover faraway planets, to rediscover the needs of the brothers and sisters orbiting around us,\u201d he said. \u201cHow wonderful would it be if solidarity \u2014 this beautiful and sometimes inconvenient word \u2014 were not simply reduced to social work and became instead the default attitude in political, economic and scientific choices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Francis&#8217; participation in the TED conference marked a new era for the Vatican&#8217;s communications operation, which has increasingly sought to get the pope&#8217;s message out via social media and nontraditional news sources.<\/p>\n<p>The reaction in Rome was positive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese days, communications and the Ted Talks are very powerful,\u201d Bob Livingstone, a tourist from Brisbane, Australia said after Francis&#8217; Wednesday general audience in St. Peter&#8217;s Square. \u201cEvery politician does (it) and he is a politician for the church.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VATICAN CITY \u2014 Pope Francis is warning the powerful to act humbly or risk ruin, using the first-ever papal TED &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":33,"featured_media":100094,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1482,16,17],"tags":[2300,18428],"class_list":["post-100093","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-breaking","category-news","category-news-w","tag-pope-francis","tag-ted-talk","mauthors-nicole-winfield","mauthors-the-associated-press"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/100093","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/33"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=100093"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/100093\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/100094"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=100093"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=100093"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/canadianinquirer.net\/v1\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=100093"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
