Cape Breton ferry out of service after pencil sized cracks found in hull

By on January 17, 2014

ENGLISHTOWN, N.S.—A ferry service in Cape Breton is expected to remain out of service throughout the weekend after a pair of pencil-sized cracks were discovered in the boat’s hull.

The Englishtown ferry was taken out of service Wednesday afternoon after the cracks were noticed in the void space in the aft section of the vessel.

A spokeswoman for the province’s Transportation Department says officials have to wait for high tide to get it out of the water before they can carry out repairs.

A work crew has been dispatched to Englishtown where they will turn the ferry around, take it out of the water and position it on a slip that will keep it out of the water.
