MANILA — Vice President Jejomar Binay’s impeachment may not be entertained by the House of Representatives, according to Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr.

In a statement to ABS-CBN in The Hague, Netherlands,  Belmonte said that he will discourage the ‘time-consuming’ impeachment process.

“I am not going to encourage impeachment. I’d like to discourage it in fact because whether he is impeached or not, it’s just going to be a time-consuming, divisive thing,” he said.

The statement came following reports that some Liberal Party (LP) lawmakers are planning to file an impeachment case against Binay.

Belmonte, who is a part of the top-level delegation representing the country in international court, said that it would be better if LP will allow Binay to run as the opposition’s candidate.

The Speaker, meanwhile, advised Binay to attend the senate inquiry and address all the accusations raised against him.
