PH presents fishing, environmental claims before international court

MANILA — The Philippine delegation presented its claims against China during the continuation of the first round of arguments before the Permanent Court of Arbitration.

The country presented its environmental and fishing claims to strengthen its appeal to the international tribunal.

The Philippines is asking the court to declare China’s claims illegal as it violates the United Nations’ maritime laws.

Advocates Lawrence H. Martin, Professor Bernard H. Oxman and Paul S. Reichler presented why the country’s claims fall within the jurisdiction of the tribunal during the morning hearing.

Professor Philippe Sands also addressed questions of a member of the tribunal from yesterday’s hearing.
