MANILA — Better-functioning toilet facilities will soon be within reach of passengers taking the Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT-3) system, the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) said Thursday.

DOTC spokesperson Miguel Arthur Sagcal said that with the beginning of the toilet rehabilitation project last Feb. 26, all 63 comfort rooms of the MRT-3 will undergo tile replacement, installation of new fixtures, ceiling improvements, repainting, electrical and mechanical upgrades, and plumbing and de-clogging works.

The rehabilitation project will start with the comfort rooms for male passengers and persons with disability (PWDs), which will take around four months to complete.

Renovation of the comfort rooms for female passengers, which will be completed in another three months, will follow.

There will also be civil works underway at the North Avenue Station in Quezon City, while renovations at other stations will begin in the following weeks.

Sagcal said the rehabilitation project, which will be done in phases, is scheduled for completion in September this year.

“Among the basic necessities of an MRT-3 rider are functioning and decent comfort rooms,” Sagcal said in a statement.

“Alongside our improvement projects for train operations is this toilet rehabilitation project, which responds to the call of our commuters for better passenger comfort and convenience,” he added.
