MANILA – Contrary to claims made in the published memoir of former National Security Adviser Jose T. Almonte, Sen. Gregorio Honasan II said on Wednesday that he was not involved in a plot to assassinate Ferdinand Marcos and his family.
Almonte’s memoir, entitled “Endless Journey: a Memoir” says that Honasan plotted an assault on Malacañang Palace with the intent of killing the Marcoses.
The former security head founded the Reform the Armed Forces Movement (RAM), the core group of which included Honasan.
Honasan, however, said that Almote’s claim is an outright lie. Furthermore, Almontes’ account of how he supposedly discouraged Honasan from staging military coup d’etats against Cory Aquino’s administration was “not supported by fact,” Honasan also said.
“My own take is you don’t have to lie or distort history to sell a book,” Honasan said in an interview with reporters; as he added that other members of the Ram could validate his denials of Almonte’s claims.
Almonte’s book was launched on Wednesday.
