MANILA — Common cards are set to be launched for the Light Rail Transit Lines 1 and 2 (LRT-1, LRT-2) and the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) by September.

Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) noted that this common ticketing scheme or Automatic Fare Collection System (AFCS) will make purchasing single journey tickets more convenient for passengers.

The AFCS is expected to lessen queuing time and will allow for seamless transfer between each line.

With the new card system, passengers can easily “tap-and-go”.

DOTC senior adviser at the office for planning Robert Siy said that this will work in such a way that the cards will need to be loaded in order to work, however he did not elaborate on the process.

Siy said that the agency is meanwhile considering applying the same system for Metro Manila buses.

The AFCS is only one of the major upgrades set to be implemented for the year. Repairs in the LRT-1, LRT-2 and MRT-3 are also set to be done within the year.
