According to reports from state agencies, areas of the southern Philippines experienced a 6.1 magnitude earthquake on Monday. The quake’s epicentre was luckily situated too far from the shore to cause any notable damage.

Government seismologist Ishmael Larag said that the epicenter was located in the Sulu Sea, approximately 205 kilometres (127 miles) west of Zamboanga City.

“It was too far from inhabited areas to cause damage,” Larag told reporters from the AFP in Manila, although he noted that the effects of the quake were strong enough to shake areas of Zamboanga City

Thus far, there have been no reports of casualties, nor have there been reports of damage to property.

Larag said that they have not raised a tsunami warning in the affected areas, but cautioned that there may be aftershocks.
