MANILA — Forty-six percent of Philippine Science High School (PSHS) graduates will meet the criteria of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Mario Montejo said on Monday.
During the Congress Budget Hearing at the House of Representatives, Montejo said this shows that Filipino students is quite competitive in the field of math.
At the budget hearing, the PSHS has proposed an increase in its 2015 budget by 15.12 percent, to Php 1.1 million from last year’s Php 963.8 thousand.
Specifically, PSHS’ fund for personal services is estimated at 370.8 thousand pesos, while maintenance and other operating expenses is allocated at 398 thousand.
Moreover, a Php 340.76 thousand proposed allocation for capital outlay was also added to PSHS’ funds for 2015.
Relatively, the DOST stated that their scholars are under a monitoring system after graduation.
”We have a monitoring system to identify where students under our scholarship program are working. It is still not complete, it’s in process,” a representative from the DOST told the Congressional Budget Committee.
PSHS is one of the top producers of math and science students in the country.
