Alyssa Quijano, the ex-girlfriend of Charice Pempengco who transitioned to Jake Zyrus, stepped into her own spotlight last Sunday, April 28 by performing her own rendition of Regine Velasquez’ “Araw Gabi” on ABS-CBN’s newest singing competition, Idol Philippines.
During her audition, Alyssa, who is also a former X Factor Philippines contestant, introduced herself to the panel of judges, that includes Regine Velasquez, Moira dela Torre, James Reid, and Vice Ganda. She also briefly touched on her history with the Filipino personality and how she has developed her own career after their breakup in 2017.
During the self-introduction, Alyssa had mentioned that after numerous years, she is finally pursuing her Medical Technology course. Asia’s Songbird quickly asked why she had stopped, to which Alyssa replies, “That time, I was in love with a singer like me and they’re a known singer.” Immediately, Regine exclaims, “I want to know who this is!” with Alyssa then responding that “It’s Charice.”
When asked about the specifics of the relationship, which began in 2013 soon after Charice came out as a ‘tomboy’, she elaborates in Filipino, “I’ve sacrificed a lot in the relationship because I stopped singing. I lost the Alyssa that I knew.” She adds, “I was just giving my all so I can forget myself.”
The judges were wowed by Alyssa’s rendition of “Araw Gabi,” with one ‘yes’ from each immediately handing her a ticket to the next round, Idol City. Regine expressed her delight, saying, “You did it perfectly. I love the way that you sang [the song]. You gave it your own twist, you gave it your own version. I am so happy you’re back. You are meant to do this.” Moira added, “Never ever, ever put your dreams on hold ever again. Because this is clearly for you.”
