Duterte cannot extend term under new charter, says Con-com head

By , on March 27, 2018

President Rodrigo Duterte’s term as chief executive can’t seek re-election under the proposed federal constitution, Consultative committee chairman Reynato Puno said.

Since Duterte was elected under the 1987 Constitution, the limits of the term under that Constitution will still apply, which means he cannot seek reelection, Puno explained.

“As of now the prohibitions and term limits under the 1987 Constitution would still be binding,” Puno said in a media briefing on Monday.

He guaranteed that the consultative committee will not include amendments that would give way for public officials extend their terms in office.

“There will be no holdover provision,” Puno said.

Puno added that there is no need for Duterte to extend his term beyond 2022, adding that by the time the government has already shifted to a federal form, a new president will be voted.
