PH eyes China, other non-western countries to supply helicopters

By , on February 13, 2018

Following the failed helicopter deal between the Philippines and Canada, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana has named countries that could replace Canada as supplier.

“We are looking at Korea, Russia, China, Turkey and other countries for our the medium-lift helicopters in lieu of the Bell 412,” Lorenzana told reporters.

The decision of President Rodrigo Duterte to cancel the purchase of the 16 helicopters was made after Canadian trade minister Francois-Philippe Champagne ordered to review the contract due to concerns that the choppers will be used to attack rebels.

The defense secretary said that the formal letter canceling the contract is being prepared and will be signed this week.

Lorenzana admitted that the termination of the deal will delay the military’s modernization program as this “brings the procurement process back to square one.”
