Pope Francis, in his visit to Chile, asked for forgiveness over the “irreparable damage” inflicted upon child sexual abuse victims by priests in Chile.
Pope Francis said he felt the need to express his “pain and shame” over the sexual abuse some children were subjected to.
Vatican spokesman Greg Burke said the Pope spoke with the sexual abuse victims in a strictly private meeting where only he and victims were present.
“This was so they could speak of their suffering to Pope Francis, who listened to them, and prayed and cried with them,” Burke said.
