Aguirre to testify against Chief Justice Sereno

By , on December 22, 2017

Standing by his claims that Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno has purportedly delayed the transfer of cases against the ISIS-inspired Maute group, Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II will testify in the impeachment proceedings against her.

After receiving an invitation from the House justice committee to appear in the hearing, Aguirre said he will be attending on Tuesday.

The chief justice is currently facing an impeachment complaint filed by lawyer Lorenzo “Larry” Gadon for allegedly delaying Aguirre’s request to transfer Maute cases outside Mindanao.

According to the impeachment complaint, “Sereno has been delaying the issuance and release of the resolution because she failed to get a majority vote on her desire to keep the Maute and similar cases in Cagayan de Oro City, to the detriment of the service.”

“Indeed, the intentional delay on the part of respondent Sereno to issue and release the much-awaited resolution, only because she has lost in the vote, is another count of culpable violation of the Constitution,” it said.

Meanwhile, Aguirre said his testimony for tomorrow’s hearing would focus on his actions in connection with his request.
