Drug war unlikely to cause arguments between Trump, Duterte, says Roque

By , on December 22, 2017

Trusting that the meeting of President Rodrigo Duterte and US President Donald Trump will run smooth, presidential spokesman Harry Roque said that tackling the administration’s war on drugs won’t create tension between the two leaders.

“I don’t think it would be a contentious point between the two presidents,” Roque said on Tuesday in an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, citing that President Trump has even lauded Duterte for “doing the right thing in embarking on this war on drugs.”

According to Roque, “There are parallels with the policies adopted by the two presidents as far as drugs is concerned.”

When asked for comments regarding Duterte’s campaign against illegal drugs, Roque said, “I would say that it was never his intention to conduct a war on drugs that would violate the Constitution and fundamental human rights.”
