Diaz bags 2 medals in international weightlifting

ZAMBOANGA CITY — Zamboangueña Olympian Hidilyn Diaz on Friday (11:30 a.m. Philippine time) has bagged two medals in the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championship In Anaheim, California.

The IWF in Anaheim started on Monday, November 27, and will end on Tuesday, December 5.

Elbert Atilano, Philippine Weightlifting Association vice president, on Friday said Diaz bagged a silver medal in the women’s 53-kilogram (kg) category in clean and jerk lifting 113-kg. The first and third placers are from Thailand and Turkmenia, respectively.

Overall, Diaz lifted a total of 119-kg earning her a bronze medal. Thailand and Turkmenia landed the first and second placers, respectively.

Atilano congratulated Diaz as she continue to bring honor to the country, in general, and this city, in particular.

“Always pray for guidance and keep your feet on the ground,” Atilano added.

He said Diaz’ participation in the IWF is a tune-up game in preparation for the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Diaz gained international recognition as she bagged the silver medal in the women’s 53-kg category in the 2016 Rio de Janiero Olympics. (PNA)
