PSEi surges to new high; peso stays strong

MANILA — Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) surged to a new high Wednesday while the peso stayed firm as investors noted the negative external developments.

PSEi rose 0.37 percent, or 31.12 points, to 8,344.05 points.

The broader All Shares followed with a 0.32 percent, or 15.84 points, uptick to 4,907.84 points.

All the sectors finished with gains with the Services rising by 0.91 percent; followed by the Industrial, 0.58 percent; Mining and Oil, 0.37 percent; Holding Firms, 0.31 percent; Financials, 0.29 percent; and Property, 0.19 percent.

Volume reached 2.48 billion shares amounting to PHP6.55 billion.

Gainers led losers at 106 to 88 while 62 shares were unchanged.

The peso ended the day at 51.00 from 51.05 a day ago.
Its closing level  is also the unit’s opening level, which in turn is better than the 51.23 start in the previous session.

It traded between 51.00 and 50.90, resulting in a 50.951 average for the day.

Volume reached USD761.75 million, lower than the USD792.8 million Tuesday. (PNA)
