PSEi up Monday, peso retreats

MANILA — The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) ended the week’s first trading day with gains unlike the peso, which was hurt by the general strengthening of the greenback.

PSEi rose by 1.04 percent, or 84.85 points, to 8,256.28 points  Monday after recovering last Friday .

The broader All Shares tracked the main gauge, rising 0.54 percent, or 26.01 points, to 4,867.36 points.

It was a mix for the sectors with Holding Firms, Property, and Financials rising by 1.97 percent, 0.94 percent, and 0.78 percent, respectively.

On the other hand, Mining and Oil fell 0.48 percent, Industrial by 0.36 percent, and Services by 0.28 percent.

Volume for the day reached 1.4 billion shares amounting to PHP7.41 billion.

Gainers led losers at 107 to 96 while 52 counters were unchanged.

The peso, meanwhile, shed 26.5 centavos and finished the day at 51.08 from 50.815 Friday last week.

It opened the day at 50.90 from 50.88 in the previous session.

It traded between its opening level and 51.10, resulting in an average of 51.036.

Volume for the day amounted to USD888 million, up from the USD740.3 million at the end of last week. (PNA)
