Remember that day when you really had trouble catching your breath with tears at the corner of your eyes as you were dying of laughter, streaming Filipino-American comic Joseph Glenn Herbert’s, a.k.a Jo Koy? His first stand-up special on Netflix where he narrated that his Filipino mom cures every illness he had (even possibly pneumonia) using Vicks VapoRub? That his mom told him pneumonia will come out from his foot if he applies Vicks on the bottom of it and cover it with socks?
How about that day when you were probably the loudest person on Earth, laughing nonstop over his second Netflix special where he shared how his teenage son never experienced those ‘relatable things’ he went through as a kid, like being told to collect tons of free napkins from a restaurant or fast-food chain and being forced to use a Cool Whip container as an alternative for the lunchbox he lost? Some might not understand the feeling, but most Asian kids know how much trouble they will be in once their mom finds out that they lost their precious tupperwares. Believe me, you will never want to go back to your house without the tupperware.
While reading this, maybe you are smiling (or laughing?) as you recall those scenes in your head and your hilarious reaction to it that you don’t even want to imagine. That’s okay, though, because when Jo Koy shares stories, people tend to just burst out laughing that they can hardly keep it in and I’m one of the living evidence of it.
To break free from all the things that are happening all over the world, it would really be a nice idea to binge-watch these comedy specials again, but you have only less than a week to do that because, on the 12th of June, Jo Koy will be coming back on the streaming giant with a new special! Meaning to say, you only have a few days left to condition yourself, check if you are in shape because this Fil-Am stand-up comedian will surely make your head and tummy hurt, and might as well give you a heart problem too? Kidding!
On the same day that his home country, the Philippines, will be proudly raising its flag in celebration of its 122 years of independence, Netflix will be releasing “Jo Koy: In His Elements” which was recorded exactly in the Philippines. We have heard Jo Koy sounding so proud whenever he mentions his Filipino heritage as frequent and as much as he can, but this time, he will not just be talking about it — he will be bringing the world to the Philippines and expose it more to the country’s people and culture.
“This is a very special moment for me. This is that one special where I was like, ‘I need to get back home.’ I need to show people where my mom’s from,” he said in his video announcement.
His new special, Jo Koy said, will be all about Filipinos, from the cameraman, to the people in the audience, and to the people that own the venue where they filmed at.
“We get to embrace our culture and have a good time, and I can’t wait for the world to see it. I love you guys. I’m so proud of this one, but my mom is going to be even more proud because I finally brought Netflix to the Philippines,” he continued.
In the trailer, Jo Koy flexes Filipino performers, Filipino food particularly Chicken Adobo, and more places in his homeland while he was seen riding the Philippines’ iconic jeepney.
Jo Koy also invited his Filipino-American friends to join him as he travels through the streets of the Philippines. They are Grammy-winning music producer Ramon “!llmind” Ibanga, Jr., dancer Ronnie Abaldonado a.k.a Bboy Ronnie, and comedians Andrew Lopez, Joey Guila, and Andrew Orolfo. Singer-songwriter Iñigo Pascual is also guesting in his special.
His friends shared the exciting news on their respective Instagram accounts, with !llmind saying that coming back to the Philippines was “one of the best experiences in my life,” while Orolfo said it was “an experience we will never forget.”
Joey, meanwhile, shared he was thankful that he was able to visit the country for the first time and that he “had the time of my life.”
Lopez, for his part, said he has a lot of “cool stuff” to tell people soon about their visit, while Ronnie said he cannot wait for the new special to be released.
