The death toll for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the Philippines has now climbed to six, the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed on Saturday, March 14.

In a statement, the Health department said that the patient died on Friday, March 13, due to “severe pneumonia with concomitant acute kidney injury.”

He was admitted at the Northern Mindanao Medical Center last March 3 “after [experiencing] onset of symptoms last February 24,” it noted.

The sixth fatality was the 40th case in the country. He was a 54-year-old Filipino male from Lanao del Sur with no history of foreign travel and it was only on March 11 when it was confirmed that he tested positive for the virus.

A 44-year-old Chinese man from Wuhan City in China was the first fatality recorded in the country and was also the first death recorded outside China.

The second fatality was a 67-year-old Filipina who was confined at the Manila Doctors Hospital. Her death was confirmed by the DOH last March 11.

A day after this, the Health department announced that three more patients who tested positive for the COVID-19 have died: PH6 or patient 6, PH5 or patient 5, and PH37 or patient 37.

PH6, a 59-year-old Filipina and PH5, a 62-year-old Filipino, were a couple residing in Cainta, Rizal. They were admitted at the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM), according to the DOH’s data.

PH37, meanwhile, was an 88-year-old Filipina from Pasig City who was admitted at the Philippine Heart Center on March 6, after she experienced onset symptoms last February 28.

President Rodrigo Duterte has earlier placed the National Capital Region (NCR) on “community quarantine,” as he raised the COVID-19 alert in the Philippines to code red sublevel 2.

The Palace said Duterte will remain in Manila during the month-long community quarantine to oversee the government’s measures to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
