MANILA — South Korea on Friday donated USD200,000 (or approximately PHP10 million) to the Philippines for the 45,000 evacuees displaced in last Sunday’s Taal Volcano eruption.

Korean Ambassador Han Dong-man handed the check to Senator Richard Gordon, chairman of the Philippine Red Cross at the PRC Tower in Mandaluyong City.

In a media statement, Han said the money is South Korea’s “humanitarian assistance for affected individuals of the Taal Volcano eruption.”

Thousands of evacuees who fled their homes are currently staying in various shelters in Batangas.

The South Korean government has been providing humanitarian aid to the Philippines through the PRC to assist communities affected by various natural disasters that hit the country the past few years such as the eruption of Mayon Volcano in February 2018, Typhoon Ompong in September 2018, and the earthquake in Mindanao in October 2019.

It also provided assistance for civilians displaced by the conflict in Marawi City in July 2017.
