Senate OKs bill postponing barangay, SK polls to Dec. 2022

MANILA — A measure seeking the postponement of the 2020 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections to Dec. 5, 2022 hurdled second reading in the Senate on Tuesday.

The upper chamber approved Senate Bill No. 1043 following the adoption of several amendments.

The bill seeks to amend Republic Act No. 9164 by moving the barangay and SK elections to Dec. 5, 2022 from the second Monday of May 2020.

It also proposes that the subsequent polls be held on the first Monday of December 2025 and every three years thereafter.

The term of office of barangay and SK officials shall begin at noon of January 1 following their election.

Until their successors have been duly elected, all incumbent barangay and SK officials shall remain in office, unless sooner removed or suspended for cause.
