Despite making a statement that he refuses to accept the offer of Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) Chairman Bambol Tolentino declaring him to be chef de mission (CDM) as the country hosts the upcoming 2019 South East Asian (SEA) Games starting November, Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman William “Butch” Ramirez announced in an appeal made last Wednesday, May 29 that he has changed his mind and will “do this for the interest of unity.”

In a separate statement made the day before, Ramirez expressed his dismay of the disunity in Philippine sports, referring to the removal of POC Congressman Monsour del Rosario and deputy Charlie Ho from their positions last Monday, May 27. He shared, “Through this, I express my solid support to the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine South East Asian Games Organizing Committee. We must stand as one,” explaining, “I accept the challenges of the CDM position, aside from the instructions of my bosses, to heed the call for help of the Philippine Olympic Committee. As the sports government arm, we show our readiness to step in, to help in the capacity being requested and if possible, mediate to make unity happen.”

Ramirez is familiar with the CDM role as he served in the same position during the last time the Philippines hosted the SEA games 14 years ago. Ramirez elaborated, “I pray that all concerned consider a truce and aim to focus on this commitment which we must undertake as a united sporting community of a strong and focused Philippines.”

He assured Philippine sports fans nationwide that he is in constant communication with his superiors in Malacañang to continually monitor and assess the sports landscape of the country. “Last night, I was given firm instructions which I shall carry out, knowing beyond any doubt that national interest is primary concern of government, and should be of all,” he said.

The 2019 SEA Games will proceed from November 30 to December 13.
