Tanauan Mayor shot dead

By , on July 2, 2018

Tanauan City Mayor Antonio Halili was shot dead during the city’s flag-raising ceremony on Monday morning, July 2.

Halili did not survive the single gunshot wound on his chest that he took from the unidentified gunman. He was declared dead on arrival at 8:45 a.m. in CP Reyes Hospital.

Tanauan City Public Information Officer Gerry Laresma was documenting the flag-raising ceremony through a Facebook live video, showing the mayor with some city hall officials singing the Philippine National Anthem “Lupang Hinirang,” but just when the ceremony was about to end, a gunshot was heard.

Calabarzon police director Chief Superintendent Edward Carranza said that he is forming a special investigation task group (SITG) to probe Halili’s killing.

Halili is best known for his “walk of shame” campaign, where he ordered alleged drug offenders to walk on the streets wearing shirts and signs saying they are criminals.

Halili was also stripped of police control after the government linked him to illegal drugs.
