Robredo hits columnist over ‘fake news’

By , on April 24, 2018

Vice President Leni Robredo slammed Manila Times columnist Rigoberto Tiglao for spreading “fake news” that she and the Liberal Party (LP) have influenced the passage of European lawmakers’ resolution asking the Duterte administration to respect human rights in its war on drugs.

Tiglao in his article said he was informed that while in Germany for a forum, Robredo and some LP members met with “German members of the European Parliament to urge them to have the April 18 resolution passed.”

Reacting to this, Robredo said in a statement posted on her Twitter account, “I don’t read his columns nor do I know him. One thing I can say is he definitely is a purveyor of fake news. Never saw or spoke or communicated with a single EU official or representative while I was in Germany.”

A statement posted on her official Facebook page stated that the Germany trip was scheduled as early as October 2017, 6 months before the resolution was released.

It added that the purpose of the trip was to provide an avenue to “engage German academics, members of civil society, and officials on poverty alleviation and women empowerment.”
