Cayetano apologizes to Kuwait over PH embassy’s rescue ops

By , on April 24, 2018

Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano apologized to the Kuwaiti government over the action made recently by the Philippine Embassy that is against the laws of the Middle Eastern country.

A video circulating on social media showed some Filipinos who were being rescued from their employers in Kuwait by the Philippine Embassy. This operation prompted the Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior (MoI) to summon Philippine Ambassador Renato Villa and caused Cayetano to issue an apology.

“It is in this spirit that I apologized to my counterpart and we apologized to the Kuwaiti government, Kuwaiti people and the leaders of Kuwait if they were offended by some actions taken by the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait,” Cayetano said.

He, however, stressed that “there are certain exceptions when there is life or death threat to our nationals,” that call for a “swift action.”

Cayetano added that the incident has already been explained to his Kuwaiti counterpart.

“But we have explained to their ambassador and their ambassador has accepted this explanation. Of course, we will also send it to our counterparts that this was all done in the spirit of emergency action to protect Filipinos,” he said.
