Duterte names new heads of three gov’t agencies

By , on April 6, 2018

President Rodrigo Duterte has named new appointees who will head the Department of Justice (DOJ), Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

On Thursday, the president appointed Director Oscar Albayalde as the new chief of the PNP. His appointment came after Duterte consulted people in Davao City who said Albayalde was “too strict,” a quality Duterte liked as he said, “the stricter the better.”

Meanwhile, Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom) chief Lt. Gen. Carlito Galvez Jr. was appointed as AFP’s next chief of staff. He was responsible for ending the 5-month war in Marawi.

After Duterte confirmed accepting then Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II’s resignation on Thursday, Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque on the same day announced that the chief executive has appointed Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Menardo Guevarra as the new DOJ secretary.

In a television interview, Guevarra said it was Special Assistant to the President Bong Go who informed him that Duterte wanted him to head the DOJ.

He cited Duterte’s eagerness “to restore the Department to what it was before, a very dignified Department of Justice,” which makes “housecleaning” one of his priorities.
