Duterte to urge Congress to conduct special session on BBL

By , on December 22, 2017

President Rodrigo Duterte said he is set to ask Congress to convene a special session so that they can have a proper deliberation regarding the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL).

He will do this even just for one day to let the concerns of the Moro people be heard.

Referring to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the Moro National Liberation Front, the president stressed that all concerned groups should be part of the peace talks.

“For me, it must be inclusive, all. No one should be left out in this peace talks, MILF, MNLF, Lumad, all groups should join,” Duterte said on Monday in his speech during the first Bangsamoro Assembly held in Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao.

“I will work very hard for it. I will ask Congress to a special session just to hear you talk about this. I said, this is sacred, this is important,” Duterte added.

However, senators said on Tuesday that holding a special session to discuss the draft of the BBL can’t be achieved this year.

Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III said that Senator Sonny Angara, Senate committee on local government has to conduct a hearing on the draft BBL first.

Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III also said, “Even if we work on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, it will not be done this year. First quarter next year is more possible.”
