Duterte confident that law vs. fake news won’t be passed

By , on December 22, 2017

President Rodrigo Duterte expressed his certainty that creating a law against fake news is unlikely to happen as this entails censorship.

Duterte on Wednesday said, “I am sure they cannot pass a law against fake news.”

The president said that while he was listening to the probe on the proliferation of fake news, he concluded that senators were suggesting crafting a law that will set standards in blogging. But for the president, it is no less than censorship which defeats the purpose of bloggers. Duterte stressed that such law will never be passed.

“Ah! Dead! That’s censorship, that cannot be passed,” he said.

Instead, Duterte suggested passing a law that would increase penalties against libel and slander, emphasizing that it is more doable than prescribing rules on what’s proper and not in the content of blogs.
