EgyptAir: wreckage of missing airplane found near Greek island

CAIRO—Egypt’s Foreign Ministry confirmed to Egyptian Civil Aviation Ministry that wreckages of the missing airplane were found near the Greek Island of Karpathos, EgyptAir said on Thursday.

In a press statement, EgyptAir said Civil Aviation Ministry has received an official letter from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs declaring the finding of wreckage of the missing Flight MS804 near Karpathos Island.

The Egyptian airliner conveyed its deepest sorrow to the families and friends of the passengers onboard the flight, adding that family members of passengers and crew have been already informed.

Meanwhile, the Egyptian investigation team in cooperation with the Greek counterpart is still searching for other remains of the missing plane, according to the statement.

Earlier in the day, EgyptAir said the missing plane, an Airbus A320, disappeared from radar screens en route from Paris to Cairo Thursday at 2:45 a.m. Cairo local time (0045 GMT) with 66 people aboard, including 30 Egyptians, 15 French, two Iraqis and one each from Algeria, Belgium, Portugal, Britain, Canada, Chad, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Sudan.
