A large band of severe weather has spawned funnel clouds and produced heavy rain and damaging hail in parts of southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Dozens of photos and videos posted to Twitter show what appear to be funnel clouds touching to the ground in rural areas near Melita, Tilston and Edward in Manitoba.

In some photos, the asphalt looked to have been ripped from the road along one rural highway.

Environment Canada issued several alerts throughout the night, saying it had received reports of a tornado near Tilston as well as rotating wall clouds and funnel clouds in southeastern Saskatchewan.

In one alert, Environment Canada said the tornado had become rain-wrapped and hard to see, calling that “a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation.”

The Weather Network said that Regina had been hit by localized flash flooding and 73 millimetres of rain.

High winds also brought down power lines in various parts of the region.
