MANILA — Jonathan Oldan, a driver and assistant cameraman for CNN Philippines, was killed Thursday morning in Imus, Cavite on his way to work.
29-year-old Oldan was shot several times in the head by unidentified gunmen at Bukaneg Street, Barangay (village) Pinagbuklod. The suspects fled the scene with the weapon, according to Senior Superintendent Jonnel Estomo of the Cavite Police.
“After the incident, the suspect/s fled to unknown direction together with the weapon used,” Estomo said in a report on the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
Oldan is assigned to cover news items from the Department of Justice and the Supreme Court.
According to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, “Oldan will be the third journalist to be killed this year, 27th under the Aquino presidency and 167th since 1986” if the murder is proven to be work-related.
CNN Philippines has released a statement on Oldan’s passing:
“We deplore the killing of our colleague Jonathan Oldan. He was shot to death on his way to work this morning. We demand that his assailant/assailants be brought to justice. We condole with his family and loved ones in this most tragic and trying time. CNN Philippines condemns this act and will spare no effort to bring the criminal/criminals to justice.”
