MANILA — President Benigno Aquino III is in Canada for a three-day state visit from May 7 to 9, 2015.
As written by RTV Malacanang:
From Chicago, the President proceeds to Canada for a State Visit upon the invitation of Canadian Governor General David Johnston.
Both countries have long-standing and positive bilateral relations based on shared democratic values, strong people-to-people ties, and a mutual interest in expanding trade and commerce.
Canada is the Philippines’ 21st largest trading partner and a priority market under Canada’s Global Markets Action Plan. In 2014, the Philippines was also designated as a country of focus for the Government of Canada’s international development efforts.
President Aquino is scheduled to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Ottawa, the nation’s capital, before witnessing the signing of bilateral agreements on labor cooperation, development assistance, and infrastructure development.
The Chief Executive is also set to meet with the Filipino communities in Vancouver and Toronto. Canada is home to almost 700,000 Filipinos.
In an official press release from the website of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, he is quoted, “Canada and the Philippines enjoy a close friendship based on shared democratic values and strong people-to-people ties. I look forward to meeting with President Aquino to further strengthen the bonds between our two countries, including in the areas of trade, investment, development and security, benefitting the citizens of both nations.”
