TORONTO — Former Toronto Mayor Rob Ford says he’s tentatively scheduled to have surgery for his cancerous tumour on May 7.

Ford told CBC News that whether the surgery goes ahead depends on diagnostic tests showing that tumours in his abdomen and back have shrunk enough to operate.

Ford has received both chemotherapy and radiation since doctors discovered the tumour last September.

As a result, Ford gave up his re-election bid as mayor and instead ran for his old council seat, which he won in the October election.

Ford has previously said the abdominal tumour needed to shrink to about three centimetres before surgeons could safely operate.
