Singaporean artist writes thank you song for Lee Kuan Yew

By on March 25, 2015

The world lost a remarkable and one of a kind leader when Singapore’s first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew passed away Monday, March 23. The founder of modern Singapore was 91. The world expressed their condolences and mourned with the people of Singapore.

Many chose to use social media to express their sentiments with the loss of a great leader, including Singaporean artist Dominic Chin who wrote a song in honor of Lee Kuan Yew.

Chin wrote on his YouTube video:

I wrote this song specifically because I would like to publicly appreciate Mr Lee Kuan Yew for all that he has done for the country. He is literally the reason why Singapore is where it is today & I believe in giving honour where honour is due.

He has been getting a lot of unnecessary hate recently on the internet, and it really frustrates me how much some people (youths especially) are just purely ungrateful & ignorant. A few of my friends who share the same spirit as I do just ran with this project to really appreciate Mr Lee for who he is. If you share the same spirit as we do, share this video and let him know that there are a lot of us who do appreciate him for all that he has done.

Mr Lee, if you’re reading this, I would like you to know that you are appreciated and celebrated, and there are a lot of youths here that really treasures you. We recognise your work and we want to thank you for all that you’ve done.

Thank you for believing in Singapore, in dreaming big and large for Singapore. Because you first had a dream, we all can dream to achieve greater things.

Once again, thank you for all that you’ve done. #TYMrLee #WeLoveLionCity #LoveSg

Love & light,
Dominic Chin

YOU FIRST BELIEVED
This Is My Home
A place filled with peace and security
A place that would not have come so far that easily.
If it wasn’t because you first believed.

This is my life

A life of comfort and joy
A life that would not have been achieved easily.
If it wasn’t because you first believed.

[Chorus]
I can spread my wings and reach for the sky
I know, I’m safe here to fly.
Because you first dreamed, and made it a reality.
I can dream and dream to achieve.

[Verse 2]
Your voice came forth,
and made the change against all odds.
A nation you’ve built with sweat and tears
And it is because you first believed.

[Chorus]
I can spread my wings and reach for the sky
I know, I’m safe here to fly.
Because you first dreamed, and made it a reality.
I can dream and dream to achieve.

[Bridge]
This peace and this harmony did not come free
You did not fight in vain.
Through your hard work and faith,
you brought a new change
Now we see this nation strong and free!

[Chorus]
I can spread my wings and reach for the sky
I know, I’m safe here to fly.
Because you first dreamed, and made it a reality.
I can dream and dream to achieve.

And dream to achieve.

Because you first dreamed and made it a reality,
Now we can dream and dream to achieve.
