SYDNEY — Australia’s highest professional medical body called on Tuesday for the sport of boxing to be banned after a boxer died.

The renewed demand from the Australian Medical Association (AMA) came hours after the boxer’s final bout.

Professional Queensland boxer Braydon Smith fell into a coma 90 minutes after a fight and did not recover.

The 23-year-old collapsed after his featherweight bout against Filipino John Moralde.

“We believe that a so-called sport where two people knock each other in the head as often as you possibly can to win a bout seems rather barbaric,” Queensland AMA president Dr. Shuan Rudd told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
