MANILA — A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Zambales province in Central Luzon and was felt also in Metro Manila on Sunday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
In its bulletin, Phivolcs said the tremor occurred at 3:31 a.m. with its epicenter traced 43 kilometers southwest of San Antonio in Zambales.
The agency said the tremor was felt at Intensity 4 in Manila, Quezon City, Pasig City, Makati City, Pasay City, Hagonoy, Bulacan; San Mateo, Rizal; and Obando, Bulacan.
It added that Intensity 3 was registered in Tagaytay City and San Miguel, Tarlac, and Intensity 2 in Baguio City and Batangas City
The agency noted that the quake, which was tectonic in origin, had a depth of 85 kilometers.
Philvocs said there was no casualty or damage reported from the temblor but aftershocks were expected from the affected areas.
The agency also said there was no danger from a tsunami as the earthquake was too deep and the magnitude was not powerful enough to generate seismic sea waves.
Meanwhile, a magnitude 4.2 quake jolted Davao Occidental at around 4:12 a.
m. with its epicenter traced 74 kilometers southeast of Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental.
The tremor, which was tectonic in origin, had a depth of 15 kilometers.
Phivolcs said there was no casualty or damage reported nor aftershocks expected from the quake.
The Philippines lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where 20 to 25 earthquakes per day — mostly imperceptible — are common.
