MANILA – Senator Grace Poe, chairperson of the committee on public order, voiced her disappointment over the non-attendance of Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Alan Purisima at her committee’s hearing concerning crimes involving police officers and possible laws to bring the police force up to speed with modern times.
“We’ve sent a letter two weeks ago and we received word that he is going to attend,” said Poe. “I don’t think it takes an expert to realize that what’s being discussed nowadays is the rising criminality. And this is the best forum for him to explain the need to have these modernization bills passed,” Poe said.
“So for the record why is he not here? What is he attending to today?” she queried.
To shed some light on the matter, the senator, resorted to asking Purisima’s subordinates to explain his whereabouts during the meeting.
“I have no real knowledge of his schedule, but I will surely convey your dismay and concerns,” Chief Supt. Alexander Ignacio, PNP’s director for plans, replied to Poe’s questions.
Poe reiterated that Purisima’s attendance was vital in order for him to have defended himself and the PNP, especially in light of the September 1 highway robbery- abduction incident involving ten police men.
“He has gone far too long relying on spokespersons to speak for him. The President himself answers issues that are asked by the public of his office. I don’t see any reason why the PNP chief should be exempt from having to directly address the people,”Poe said, as she emphasized that part of Purisima’s job is to address the public.
