A voluntary safety recall of 1,760 units of the Honda Fit(Jazz), City, Civic and Accord has been issued by Honda Cars Philippines Inc. (HCPI). The company is recalling the specific models on account of a faulty front passenger-airbag inflator.

HCPI’s directive is in accordance with a global recall of 2.1 million Honda vehicles; a worldwide motion that comes after report from Honda Motor Company determined that the faulty airbags were not earlier detected due to failure of the automatic rejection system machine.

The machine was unable to detect defective airbag inflators containing low density propellants. Thus, the faulty airbag inflators were installed during the assembly of the vehicles.

The defect could lead to excessive pressure upon airbag deployment, which may result in the rupture of the inflator case.

HCPI clarified that the recall of the vehicles is purely preventive, and that there have been no known or reported cases of abnormal passenger airbag deployment and of resulting injuries. Vehicles recalled locally will be fitted with a new front passenger airbag inflator.
