Filipino Community Event at City Hall

When: Sunday March 30th, 2014
Time: 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Where: Committee Room 1 at City Hall, 100 Queen St. West, Toronto, ON

Please RSVP here.

This community meeting has been organized through conversations that Councilor Mihevc has had with members of the Filipino community about some of the issues facing the Filipino community in Toronto. This event is meant to start a dialogue between Filipino community organizations and individuals and city agencies and non-profits about the city services that can be accessed and what partnerships can be formed to help alleviate some of these issues. It is also to recognize the important work already being done within the Filipino community and to see how we can build on those successes.

Councilor Joe Mihevc will give opening remarks and closing remarks will be given by Councillor Pam McConnell. The event will also feature two panel discussions.

The first panel of speakers will be representatives from the Filipino community, who will discuss issues that are important to a number of Filipino organizations, social demographics of the community, and current programs. Speakers include Rosalinda Cerrudo-Javier (President, Filipino Centre Toronto), Mary Ann San Juan (Secretary of the Board of Directors/Executive Council, Filipino Centre Toronto), and Dr. Roland Sintos Coloma (Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology and Equity Studies in Education, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at The University of Toronto).

The second panel will be speakers from City agencies and civil society organizations about how to access city services and collaborate with other organizations to best serve the community. Speakers include Debbie Douglas (Executive Director, Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants) and Vera Dodic (Project Manager, Toronto Newcomer Office).

Press release provided by the office of Councilor Joe Mihevc, Ward 21, St. Paul’s West. 19 March 2014.
