Aga Khan to be welcomed to the nation’s capital by PM Stephen Harper

OTTAWA – The prime minister meets today in Ottawa with the Aga Khan, the Imam of the Nizari Ismailis.

Stephen Harper will hold a private meeting with the Aga Khan on Parliament Hill before the spiritual leader addresses the House of Commons.

The Aga Khan is considered to be a direct descendant of Muhammad, the founder of Islam.

Other events and happenings around Ottawa today include:

— Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau will speak to the Ottawa business community at the Mayor’s Breakfast series.

— Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver will deliver remarks at the annual Canadian Nuclear Association conference.

— The Supreme Court of Canada renders decisions in six leave to appeal applications.

— Justice Minister Peter MacKay will wear two hats when he appears at a Senate committee to discuss Bill C-14, an Act to amend the Criminal Code and National Defence Act as it relates to mental disorders.

— NDP official languages critic Yvon Godin will present a bill that would require that all Supreme Court judges be bilingual.

— And sparks could fly as the Macdonald-Laurier Institute hosts a debate on Muslim immigration and whether it is a threat to Canada or the west.
