In November 2013 Professors Geraldine Pratt and Caleb Johnson worked with theatre artists from Canada and in the Philippines to present their performance installation, Nanay: a testimonial play, to audiences in Manila, at the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA). The play has been developed from Geraldine Pratt’s research into the lives of Filipina foreign domestic workers in Canada, as well as the circumstances of the employers who hire them. It is a series of monologues and scenes developed verbatim from interview transcripts, which are performed in different spaces throughout the theatre for small audiences of fifteen to thirty.

Liu Scholars, May Farrales and Teilhard Paradela, who helped facilitate the talkbacks in Manila, will join Dr. Geraldine Pratt to share thoughts on bringing ‘Nanay‘ to the Philippines, the reactions of Philippine audiences and to show video and photo documentations of the play.

Hosted by the UBC-Philippine Studies Series.
