MANILA–Detained Sen. Leila de Lima, in one of her handwritten letters from Camp Crame on Saturday, expressed gratitude to the European Union (EU) Parliament for its report that called for her immediate release.

“Going over the transcripts of statements during the European Parliament Plenary Session relative to my case has tremendously lifted my spirits,” De Lima said in her letter.

“Thank you Europe! Thank you World!” she added.

De Lima, former Justice Secretary and Human Rights Chair, said that she was elated particularly because there were men and women from various parts of the continent that believe in her innocence.

She was arrested and detained on February 24, 2017 for drug trafficking charges during her term as Justice Secretary under the term of former Pres. Benigno Aquino III.

Senate Pres. Aquilino Pimentel III, however, denounced the report noting that the parliament should “mind their own business”.

“The EU Parliament should know its place in the world.
