We are what we eat. But where does it come from? How does it get here?

Richmond, BC – Jovanni Sy, Artistic Director of Gateway Theatre, is bringing his critically acclaimed, wacky and fun culinary exploration of global food domination and the conquest for our appetites to the Rooftop Garden at the Richmond Cultural Centre on Saturday, May 31 and Sunday, June 1.

Everything we eat tells a story. While cooking a traditional Filipino dish in real time, writer/performer Jovanni Sy takes us on an entertaining and thought-provoking trip through history as he weaves stories of conquest and imperialistic desires through the construction (and deconstruction) of the Rellenong Bangus (Filipino stuffed milkfish). Audiences will immerse themselves in the tantalizing aromas of this dish on the Rooftop Garden at the Richmond Cultural Centre. Guests are seated with a beverage and a tasting plate is served at the conclusion of the piece. Presented by the City of Richmond and Boca del Lupo Theatre, A Taste of Empire is truly a feast for the mind and the palate.

The production, whose original run in Toronto garnered two Dora nominations, will come to Richmond on the heels of a performance on Granville Island presented by collaborator, Boca Del Lupo. Each year, the award winning theatre company, Boca del Lupo presents the Micro Performance Series (MPS). Centered on and around Granville Island, these productions are created and performed by local, national and international artists working across disciplines in intimate and small-scale forms. These performances are not smaller versions of what would normally be larger productions; these are pieces that explore what is only possible on a smaller, more intimate scale. For the first time, the series will come to Richmond adding to the menu of Arts Services’ continued efforts to present unique cultural experiences in.

A Taste of Empire will take place on May 31 until June 1, at 8 p.m. (90 minutes) at the Rooftop Garden at the Richmond Cultural Centre, 7700 Minoru Gate. Admission is $30 for adults only, which includes one beverage, snacks and a tasting plate. Drinks are available for extra cost. Seating is limited to 40 audience members per show, which will happen rain or shine. To purchase tickets, call the box office at 604-247-8323 from Monday to Friday between 2 and 9 p.m. Or, you can buy tickets in person at the Front Desk of the Richmond Cultural Centre.
