BIR receives 300 applications for retirement, resignation after erring employees warned vs graft and corruption

MANILA –About 300 personnel of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) have filed for resignation or early retirement after the new administration warned erring personnel to end graft and corruption activities.

Internal Revenue Commissioner Caesar Dulay told members of the House Ways and Means Committee in a hearing Wednesday that the Duterte administration was well aware of the corruption in BIR even before it took into office in June 2016.

He said there really were bad eggs in the agency but stressed that the new officials were slowly addressing this problem.

One of the measures towards this was by issuing warnings against those guilty of graft and corruption, he said.

“In fact I suggested when I got in that for the bad eggs, remaining bad eggs, I suggested that they either resign or take advantage of their optional retirement,” he said.

“I’m happy to share that, I don’t know if this is good news, we have about 300 resignations and retirements already. Maybe it’s a subtle way of addressing the issue of graft,” he said.

Dulay said the agency was also looking into the 400 internal administration cases filed against BIR employees.

“We’re working on those cases,” he added.
