MANILA—Mayor Joseph “Erap” Estrada has intensified his PHP100-million Parks Rehabilitation Program to spruce up the City’s parks and monuments that have been part of the City’s historical and cultural heritage.

Mayor Estrada has directed the Manila Parks and Development Office (MPDO) to undertake measures to revive these historic landmarks, many of which are already in deteriorating condition.

Once known as the “Pearl of the Orient”, the City has 48 parks and monuments, all that remained of the old Manila’s pre-war and colonial architecture.

A number of these have been converted to children’s playgrounds.

“From the moment I assumed office as the local chief executive, I already ordered a major sprucing up of our parks, monuments, other public places and including playgrounds,” Mayor Estrada said.

Under Mayor Estrada’s directive upon assumption into office, MPDO started a PHP100-million restoration program to revive these neglected landmarks.

Arsenic Lacson of the MPDO said the Estrada administration jumpstarted the restoration efforts in 2013 by providing needed funds.

Among those that underwent major facelift are Plaza Rueda and Bonifacio Shrine along Taft Avenue, Plaza Hernandez in Tondo, Plaza De Virge in Pandacan, Plaza Hugo in Sta. Ana, and Plaza Guerrero across the US Embassy, according to Lacson.

Lacson said they have been seeking the help of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to attend to the concern regarding street dwellers that have been loitering in these parks and plazas.

He added they have also asked the Manila Police District (MPD) to secure these sites.
