Toronto, U.S. stock indexes up Monday morning, loonie down slightly

TORONTO – The Toronto Stock Exchange got the trading week off to a strong start, with a triple-digit gain offsetting the loss it suffered on Friday.

The Toronto market’s S&P/TSX index was up 171.37 points Monday morning at 13,818.27. On Friday, the TSX index lost 140.26 points to close at 13,646.90.

In New York the Dow Jones average of 30 stocks was up 177.95 points at 16,562.53, the broader S&P 500 index advanced 19.46 points to 1,977.49 and the Nasdaq index gained 44.90 points to 4,872.13.

The loonie fell 0.18 a U.S. cent to 75.48 cents US.

On the commodity markets, the December gold contract fell $6.40 to US$1,131.40 an ounce, the October crude contract was up $1.28 at US$45.96 a barrel and the October contract for natural gas was down three cents at US$2.57.
