The world of Stranger Things is expanding with a new live-action prequel series, as Netflix officially announced Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, scheduled to premiere in 2028.
The announcement was made on November 6 as part of the streaming platform’s annual Stranger Things Day celebration.
Set in 1955 in Marion, Nevada, the upcoming series will take viewers several decades before the events of the original show and the stage production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
The new project is being developed by original series creators Matt and Ross Duffer, alongside longtime Stranger Things writer Kate Trefry, who will serve as co-creator, writer and showrunner.
Award-winning filmmaker Joe Wright, known for directing Pride & Prejudice, Atonement and Darkest Hour, will direct the first three episodes.
Netflix has yet to reveal the cast or detailed plot, but the production is expected to introduce an entirely new group of characters, including fresh heroes and villains, while exploring a different setting and mythology within the franchise.
The Duffer brothers said the project has been in development for years, describing it as a story that retains the spirit of the original series while offering something new to viewers.
Production is scheduled to take place in New Mexico.
The upcoming series marks another expansion of the franchise, which began in 2016 and became one of Netflix’s most successful global productions. Its universe has also grown through the animated series Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 and the stage production The First Shadow.
With its new setting and characters, Other Worlds aims to explore more mysteries within the Stranger Things universe while charting a separate story for audiences.
