President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has met with leaders of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front to discuss ways to sustain peace and stability in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, as both sides work to complete their remaining commitments under the peace agreement.
During the meeting with MILF Chairperson Ahod “Al Haj Murad” Ebrahim, the President discussed the next steps toward the full implementation of the 2014 Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro.
According to Palace Press Officer Claire Castro, the discussions included accelerating livelihood and development programs aimed at improving the lives of communities in the region.
The government and the MILF also tackled the completion of the fourth and final phase of the decommissioning process for MILF combatants, which is targeted for 2027.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to fulfilling their outstanding obligations and completing the peace process, with an exit agreement expected to be signed before the end of Marcos’ term in 2028.
The meeting comes as the Bangsamoro region enters a new phase of governance following its first parliamentary elections and the opening of its first elected Parliament.
Marcos has described the establishment of the regular Parliament as a significant milestone in the transition from armed conflict to democratic governance.
The government and the MILF are continuing efforts to ensure that the gains of the peace agreement translate into lasting stability, economic opportunities and improved public services for the Bangsamoro people.
